The Chillicothe Gazette reports that local students had difficulty on the social studies portion of the Ohio Graduation Test. Western, Eastern and Chillicothe High Schools reported a percentage of students with limited ratings of 22.5, 22.1 and 19.8, respectively. Local officials felt that the high number of calamity days this past winter had something to do with it. They also feel that they must do a better job teaching the concepts, and some are going to be implementing curriculum changes. Districts are encouraging students to take online practice tests, as well.

Newark City Schools ranks 13th of 21 like districts in OGT performance. Sophomores in the district performed the best in social studies, ranking 11th, while reading was its worst section, ranking 16th. Dana Herreman, Newark Curriculum Director, thinks that comparing the district to similar districts is a good way to gauge performance. Herreman is looking forward to moving up, not just to say that Newark is better than others, but because the students are learning.
