OGT News: Hundreds fail OGT in Cleveland

The news in Cleveland is not good for hundreds of high school seniors who failed to pass one or more portions of the Ohio Graduation Test this spring and will not be able to graduate with their class.

This is the first year that Ohio high school seniors must pass all five parts of the OGT in order to graduate. Last week, the Plain Dealer and several television stations reported that hundreds of seniors facing the "make it or break it" point in their academic careers would not make the grade.

While 2,558 seniors in the Cleveland Municipal District will get diplomas, an alarming number will not. Seven hundred and ninety-two seniors needed to pass the science portion of the test, but only 180 did so. Four hundred and sixty needed to pass the social studies section, but only 76 passed. One hundred and sixty-four needed to pass reading, but only42 passed. Four hundred and thirty-nine needed to pass math, only 85 passed. And one hundred and seventy-seven needed to pass writing, but only 64 passed.

These students face a few options to help them get diplomas. Those options include summer school with special programs to help them in retaking the tests.

But they fall into a unique category - the first Ohio high school students who failed to graduate because of testing.
