OGT News: Kent school vandalized during OGT
Theodore Roosevelt High School in Kent was vandalized last Wednesday night, in the middle of Ohio Graduation Test week, according to a story in the Ravenna Record-Courier. Whether or not there was a relationship between the vandalism and the testing period was unknown.
School officials held an assembly on Thursday morning to calm nerves and assure students there was no threat to their safety.
Superintendent Marc Crail said it was the first break in at the school in 14 years. Burglar alarms were not activated, making police wonder if they malfunctioned or someone knew how to deactivate them.
The vandalism appeared to be racially motivated since there were slurs and a Confederate flag painted on some walls. A personal computer belonging to one teacher was also missing, the newspaper article said.
The school principal noted a student had been disciplined in recent days for displaying a Confederate flag. Needless to say, authorities were going to talk to that student to see if there was a relationship to the vandalism.
One good thing that came out of the incident was a feeling of unity as students, faculty and administration got busy cleaning up the mess, scrubbing off the graffiti and putting things back in order.
Apparently, the OGT went on as scheduled.
