OGT News: End of a tense week for OGT students

Students in the Toledo area who spent their week taking the Ohio Graduation Test survived a very tense period, according to a story in The Blade newspaper.

Toledo Public Schools had 295 seniors and 482 juniors taking at least one part of the five-part test. That's not to mention all the district's sophomores who were taking the test for the first time.

This year, for the first time, Ohio students must pass all five portions of the test - math, science, social studies, reading and writing - in order to graduate. Statewide, there are 30,000 seniors who have not met the necessary requirements, according to the state's department of education.

In Toledo, many seniors think they are well prepared for the test - even if they are yet to pass all sections. Math and science seem to be the big hurdles - as they are in most districts.

The article said nearly ever high school in the Toledo area has carefully prepped students for the test, offering both tips and practice questions.

Test-taking tips ranged from getting plenty of sleep the night before the test to chewing mint gum for mental stimulation. Then, there's the admonition to eat a full breakfast before taking the test - one some people would question.

Some school districts offered blatant bribes (incentives) for students taking the test. Those bribes ranged from MP3 players to plasma TVs for students who perform well.

Each test section lasted about 2.5 hours. Monday and Tuesday were for reading and math. Wednesday was for writing; Thursday for science and Friday for social studies.

There are dozens of preparation tools on the market, ranging from flash cards to online tests that imitate the real thing. IQ-ity's online prep test is currently available at no charge to school districts throughout Ohio. This free trial will run through September and cover the strategic summer school period when many high school students are into serious preparation for the OGT.
