OGT News: Possible cheating in Cleveland on OGT

A story in the February 3 edition of The Plain Dealer (see link) said the Ohio Department of Education is investigating possible cheating on the Ohio Graduation Test by some students at Collinwood High School in Cleveland.

The state is looking into "irregular patterns" in the science portion OGT taken by 305 juniors and seniors in October. Science and math appear to be the two portions of the five-part test that offer students the greatest challenges.

This year, for the first time, Ohio high school seniors must pass all five parts of the OGT in order to obtain a diploma.

The Cleveland investigation appears to center on one unnamed teacher. It began after school resumed in January, following the Christmas break.

An Ohio Department of Education spokesman would not discuss details of the investigation. But the Cleveland schools spokesman acknowledged the probe was ongoing and said it is possible that some students may need to re-take the test.

All this is going on only about six weeks before a new class of Ohio high school sophomores will take the OGT for the first time. Preparing for the OGT is key. Students, parents and teachers are advised to check into the many practice tests on the market. Currently, IQ-ity is offering a free trial of its OGT Prep Tool to Ohio school districts. The free trial period for the OGT Prep Tool runs through September.
