Several smaller newspapers localized last weekend's wire story about the number of Ohio high school seniors in limbo, following the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT).

These students have yet to pass all five sections of the OGT - a chore they must complete in order to get a diploma this spring. The teens, about 30,000 strong, have been taking the test annually since their sophomore year. Now they must wait until results of the test administered two weeks ago are in to see if they made the cut. That won't be until May.

Last year, about 14,000 seniors had their graduations held up because they had not passed the 9th grade proficiency test - the forerunner of the OGT.

In Ashtabula County, only a relatively few students are waiting breathlessly on OGT results, the story said. Some have not passed just one or two of the five sections (math, reading, writing, science, social studies) and stand a pretty good chance of making the grade this time out.

Others will be able to "exempt" the test by earning a score of 390 or more, have an overall grade point average of "B" and a good attendance record, the story said.

The school is offering remedial tutoring and special help to make sure everyone gets their diploma.

From now until September, Ohio school districts can use IQ-ity's OGT practice test for free. The free trial period covers the strategic summer school period when some students will be trying to "catch up" in order to earn a diploma.
